# TWA. Atlas F (Spideedoscope) > [!Info] A Level at [[IBU/GAME DESIGN/Toy Worlds Atlas|Toy Worlds Atlas]] > ![[DESIGNS/ToyWorldsAtlas/Gameplay/Atlas_Gifs/F-gif.gif]] ## Design Concept This level merges a colouring-book format with a kaleidoscope mechanic. Instead of choosing from a set of colourants, as in the previous levels, here the player must move the spider’s eyes to draw a shape of a particular colour. The puzzle refers to Deleuze and Guattari’s “machine of faciality”, a psychedelic concept from “A Thousand Plateaus” that presents the face as a product of human creativity. We keep reshaping ordinary and formal languages with new words and rules. The face shares something of this strange creativity. Faces communicate, reveal information or conceal it. People save face, keep it straight, or even lose it. For actors, mimes, and clowns, the face became a skill. **Iterations**: Representing and communicating Deleuzian concepts is challenging. The puzzle went through several iterations. To explain the subverted colouring rules in a concise way, I introduced stylized rule descriptions and an animated tutorial. Jordan Logel helped highlight the Deleuzian theme with background animations in which smileys turn into birds, eyes, and waves. **Kaleidoscope / Spideedoscope**: the first kaleidoscope was invented in the XVII century by Athanasius Kircher, a Jesuit scholar. It represented a Jesuit practice of imagination training: how else would world look like if the god decided to create it in a different way? A kaleidoscope helps imagining a radically different version of reality (comp. [[Cosmoscope]]) ## Development **Technology**: Line renderer and mesh renderer. **Animation**: spider's legs (8) have segments (3). Each segment has a separate animator. Each leg sways side-to-side. 8 legs visually comprise 4 lines. The *goal* is to make the spider uncanny rather than disturbing. It has an abstract and surreal look while its movement share verisimilitude with the real spider's locomotion. ![YT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LvZ2NK8ndg) ## Doodles The idea for Spideedoscope started as a doodle on the margins of Deleuze & Guattari's "A Thousand Plateaus" | ![[DESIGNS/ToyWorldsAtlas/Concepts/F_Doodle.jpeg]] | ![[DESIGNS/ToyWorldsAtlas/Concepts/F_FacialityBook.jpeg]] | | -------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | ## Resource - [Eye Colour Palette](https://www.schemecolor.com/kaleidoscope-rainbow.php) ## Notes - Canvas with the Orangery button are Screen Space Overlay - *Colours*: (1) Triangles (between eyes) have the same colour palette as eyes (a prefab with ColourantManager.cs uses a public Color array). (2) Shapes' colour is assigned in the Inspector (Puzzle Controller > PF_ShapeCreator.cs) ![[IBU/APPENDIX/(_IB_)/atlas.(_IB_)]]
